Sonia Nanescu - Sunrise
Sunrise
A chest of constellations on fire was spilled
in- between trees’ fingertips on clouds.
With sleep in my eyes, I blink in surprise
breath caught in my chest
at the grace of this second,
I might have forgotten about leftovers
of the battle fought there,
The sacrifice of the North Star
unavoidable, his former life smeared on the sky
to save moon’s pride
no matter her ego, she was still his bride
and he would do it over and over
for as long as Earth could witness
and remember
that love is always worth it.
From the Press:
In Sunrise, Sonia Nanescu reimagines dawn as an act of cosmic devotion—an eternal love between moon and star, played out across the waking sky. The poem begins in wonder, but beneath the beauty of blazing stars is a mythic gravity: the notion that even light requires sacrifice. Nanescu's voice moves effortlessly through awe and tenderness, turning celestial motion into emotional truth. Through this lens, morning becomes a resurrection and a vow—reminding us that love, however scarred by history, keeps choosing to rise.
About the Author:
Sonia Nanescu grew up dreaming of being a ballerina, but she found out she is more of a bulldog instead. She became a dentist with shaking hands, so she had to reinvent herself. This led her to explore being a researcher for a while, and while doing so, she gained two PhDs in Biology and is now a science administrator.
While she aspired to become a motivational speaker, she realized written words can touch hearts like a ballerina would through her dance—and she pursues this like the bulldog she is. As a writer, she is an emerging poet with work published in Westward Quarterly, Subliminal Surgery, Steam Ticket, and in the anthologies Poetry Downtown 4 and Moms Who Anthology. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in Author Magazine and Turtle Way.
